Moving Insurance and Liability Tips

There are a lot of things to think about when moving. Before you even start ticking off “packing” in your moving checklist, it is necessary to check first what you need to know about moving insurance if you picked to move with a moving company because you need to know what protection you have and you need. Besides, moving insurance is also one topic you need to discuss with your moving company partner.  If you choose Pete’s Ultimate Movers, we will educate you on everything you need to know about moving insurance.

Is the moving company you chose insured?

When choosing a moving company, pick those that have insurance as they are more reliable and accountable.

General Liability Insurance: This type of insurance is not legally required from moving companies, but it is extremely helpful to have in cases of injuries, medical needs and property damages to our clients, our employees or even to passersby. For instance, during the packing process, someone got hurt or an important piece was damaged. We have invest about $450-$1000 per year to this type of insurance just to make sure our movers and you are covered.

Professional Liability Insurance: It is part of every moving company’s mission to provide quality service to our clients, so in cases of lawsuits, we need to ensure that we have the proper legal support through this insurance. We cannot halt their business as clients need us in their moving journeys.

More insurance: Companies could also opt for more coverage such as commercial auto insurance for their moving vehicles, cyber insurance if your business is available on the web and a company property insurance for the physical office and the moving equipment in it.

What are the customer insurance you can choose from?

Now, after checking if the moving company you chose is insured, it is time to check what insurance they have for you. Heads-up! Do not look for the typical kind of insurance because what you will get from moving companies are actually called valuation. This is basically the compensation you get in case of property damage or the agreed services were not met.

Full-value protection: If you are looking for an insurance that gives accountability to the moving company for any items damaged or lost in the moving process, the full-value protection is the one you should choose. This would cost you 1% of the total cost of all your belongings. For example, if you declared a total of $30,000, you are to pay $300 premium. Some arrangements you should take note is that it is the moving company’s call if they will replace or pay in the same value the destroyed or lost item.

Released Value Protection: This insurance won’t cost you as it is offered by all moving companies as a part of the deal. In this kind of insurance, the company assures you that in any item lost or damaged, you will be compensated for 60 cents per pound per article. For instance, your 50-pound item was damaged; hence, you will get a $30 compensation for the impairment.

Other types of insurance: If you are moving items of great value such as jewelries, antiques, paintings and other items with $100 or higher estimated value, declare it to your moving company because that would need another kind of insurance. You may also opt for a third party insurance of your choice or provided by the company. Talk to your agent on what coverage you will get.
